So, you’ve just booked our BMW motorcycle tour, the Desert Run – Wait, what! You haven’t? Well, after reading this blog post a holiday in Namibia will sound too tempting to simply dismiss.
A Namibia tour isn’t just another holiday. It’s not a place that you just visit. It’s a place that grows on you and becomes a part of you. So, where is Namibia? Answer: In our hearts.
So, get ready for some heart-warming Namibia facts!
1. FISH RIVER CANYON
You totally get to visit the second largest canyon in the world.
Namibia – Proving that size does, indeed, matter.
2. THE DUNES
Only Namibia can make a large collection of sand this famous. I mean, isn’t that what Namibia is known for best.
Once again proving that bigger is better. In Namibia you’ll find some of the largest dunes in the world, among others, Duin 7. Be prepared for a hard climb, and quite an intimidating sand-board trip back down again.
3. THE NAMIBIA WEATHER
Most of the time you’ll hear comments such as these with regards to Namibia’s temperature:
But, every now and again, in the Summer time, you’ll be blessed with rainfall. Just to tell you, “hang in there, buddy.”
4. THE SKELETON COAST
Hello Desert, meet Ocean.
Not many places that allow you to see two beautiful extremes, Namibia’s desert and the amazing ocean, placed at each other’s side.
5. 4X4 TRAILS
Soooo many opportunities to test out your new 4×4. This country is 4×4 crazy and for good reason. Who wouldn’t want to get down and dirty with Namibia?
7. HOLLYWOOD TOTALLY DIGS NAMIBIA
Mad Max, Beyond Borders and Flight of the Phoenix were all shot here. Also, Brangelina had their first born here. Yep, Hollywood totally wants Namibia – the natural backdrop to movies.
Just look at those faces – They totally want this.
8. WIDE VARIETY OF LANDSCAPES
Already planning to book flights to Namibia? If you hail from South Africa or other bordering countries then you might want to stop. This is not a country you want to fly to, this is one you want to travel through. So rather keep your bookings for Namibia to South Africa flights (trust me, you’ll be spent by the end of this trip).
For those not so close, there is always Air Namibia.
You ask why Namibia attracts tourists (and especially the team here at Upsouth Adventures). This is one reason why…
It’s the perfect setting(s) for tours (especially motorcycle tours). Driving from one side of Namibia to the other basically means driving through five or more extreme landscapes.
Which brings me to…
Everywhere makes for good selfies. The model in you will come alive.
10. THE BEER
When Namibians talk about their breweries:
12. METEORITE AT GROOTFONTEIN
Get your nerd on and stand on a meteorite at Grootfontein.
13. SURVIVAL SKILLS
Namibia is nie vir sIssies nie, but while you’re here it will be sure to teach you a few survival tricks (be prepared to change a flat).
Whilst we’re on the topic of survival, it will probably be a good idea to take a map of Namibia. You never know where the roads of Namibia might decide to take you next.
14. OFF ROAD CAMPING
Speaking of learning some survival tricks – The great part about Namibia is that anywhere and almost everywhere is the perfect spot for camping.
Namibia accommodation? Everywhere!
So, driving your motorcycle through the perfect landscapes be prepared to go back to basics as you will probably prefer to camp in the open air, as opposed to the booked hotel suites.
So, when your travel companions start doing their research on where to stay in Namibia, rather just remind them to pack their tents and sleeping bags.
15. THE OMAJOWA MUSHROOM
If the bizarrely large termite moulds wasn’t already enough freak people out, then perhaps the omajowa mushroom growing on it will. Once again supporting the notion, “bigger is better.”
Namibia is well-known for its popular holiday city, Swakopmund. Why? Probably because of all the rad things to do in Swakopmund: Crafts markets, hot air ballooning, quad biking over dunes, exploring the Namib, and if you want to just relax then you could always take your pick from the plenty restaurants, order up some coffee and read your Namibian newspaper.
17. THE STILLNESS OF NAMIBIA
Well, Namibia’s got your back, baby. Not many places can take your thoughts away from the hustle and bustle of modern civilisation like these open landscapes. Visiting Namibia means taking your mind on a far-away holiday.
18. SO MANY GAME RESERVES
Of which Etosha National Park is one. Also, one of the largest Wildlife Parks in Africa.
Uhm, what was that about Namibia and size again?
Come on people! Who doesn’t love getting a quick snap of a wild animal? So many #instamoments.
20. HARNAS WILDLIFE FOUNDATION
Just casually hanging out with cheetahs and lions.
21. THE CAPRIVI STRIP
Where Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Angola all gang up on Namibia to create one of the most spectacular sights ever.
Like your regular dosage of creepy? Then this ghost town will be just your cup of tea.
Be sure to get some quirky snaps with the abandoned buildings to spice up your twitter account #ScarytTweet.
23. SOSSUSVLEI – LUXURIOUS LIVING AT A LODGE ON THE DESERT
A salt and clay pan surrounded by red dunes (insert: The Mummy soundtrack). Plus, Deadvlei. Situated very close by: This strange image of the dead camel thorn trees placed against the desert backdrop is the only reason I need to visit Sossusvlei.
And just to keep things classy, check in at the Sossusvlei Desert Lodge. Treat yo self woman!
24. NAMIBIA CURRENCY
Lucky for South Africans, the Namibia currency isn’t something to worry about. No need to convert those rands.
